Mattress Q&A

Questions we get asked every single week.

No sales pitch inside. Just straight answers to the things people actually wonder about before they buy a mattress — or before they walk into our store for the first time.

Buying a Mattress

The questions that come up before you ever walk in
How do I know which mattress is right for me?

Start with three things: how you sleep (side, back, stomach, or combination), where you feel pain or pressure in the morning, and what you didn't like about your last mattress. Those answers narrow the field dramatically.

When you come in, we'll ask you those same questions and guide you to a short list of options — not every mattress in the store. Most people find the right fit within a few tries. If you'd rather read first, our Mattress Buying Guide walks through the full process.

What's the difference between memory foam, innerspring, and hybrid?

Memory foam conforms closely to your body, isolates motion well, and is quiet. It tends to sleep warmer than other types unless it has cooling technology built in.

Innerspring has a coil-based support system. More responsive and bouncy, better airflow, easier to move on. A traditional feel that most people grew up sleeping on.

Hybrid combines coils with foam comfort layers — you get the support and airflow of a coil system with the pressure relief of foam on top. It's why hybrids have become the most popular option for most sleepers.

The honest answer: the type matters less than the specific mattress. We've seen hybrids that sleep too hot and memory foam that sleeps cool. Come try them — it tells you more than any description will.

How do I know if I need a firm or soft mattress?

Your sleep position is the biggest indicator. Side sleepers usually need a softer surface to cushion the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers typically do best in the medium range. Stomach sleepers generally need firmer support to keep the hips from sinking.

Body weight matters too — a heavier sleeper will sink further into the same mattress than a lighter one. What feels medium to one person can feel firm to another.

Our Firmness Guide goes deeper, but the best way to know is to lie down on a few different options. Your body tells you faster than any quiz will.

How long should a mattress last?

A quality mattress should last 8 to 10 years with proper care. Some premium mattresses — Tempur-Pedic in particular — can last significantly longer because the material doesn't break down the same way traditional foam does.

Signs it's time to replace: you're waking up with pain that goes away after you've been up for a while, you can feel the coils or see visible sagging, or you simply sleep better somewhere else. That last one is the most telling.

Should I buy a mattress online or in a store?

In a store, if you can. You're going to sleep on this thing for 8 to 10 years. No photo, video, or review accurately replicates how a mattress feels under your specific body in your specific sleep position.

Online mattress companies have made return policies very generous specifically because they know there's a high rate of regret without trying first. You can avoid that entirely by coming in. No appointment needed — just walk in and we'll help you figure it out.

How much should I spend on a mattress?

Spend what gets you a good night's sleep — not more, not less. A $600 mattress that's the right fit is better than a $2,000 mattress that isn't.

We carry options across a wide range of price points. Tell us your budget upfront. We will not try to push you past it. We'd rather find you the best mattress for what you have than oversell you something you'll resent paying for.

If budget is a concern, ask about financing options. A $1,200 mattress over 12 months at 0% is $100/month — sometimes that changes the math.

Shopping With Us

What to expect when you visit
Is there pressure to buy when I visit?

No. We've been in business since 2001 because people trust us — and that trust disappears the moment you feel manipulated. Our team doesn't use scripts, countdown tactics, or manager "specials." You take the time you need.

If you want to leave and think about it, leave and think about it. We'll be here. Many of our best customers came back a week later after sleeping on the decision — no pun intended.

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment needed. Both our Foscoe and Boone Mall locations are open Monday through Saturday — walk in any time during store hours and someone will be with you.

What brands do you carry?

We carry Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, Sealy Posturepedic, Helix, Casper, Southerland, and Sherwood. Every brand on our floor was hand-selected — we don't carry a mattress we wouldn't put in our own homes.

We also carry Stressless recliners at our Foscoe location, along with pillows, sheets, mattress protectors, and adjustable bases at both locations.

Do you price match?

We price competitively and will always be transparent about what you're getting for the price. If you've seen something advertised elsewhere, bring it up — we'll tell you honestly whether we can match it and what the actual comparison is.

Keep in mind that online mattress pricing often doesn't include delivery, setup, old mattress removal, or local support after the sale. We do. That changes the real cost of the comparison.

Delivery & Setup

What happens after you buy
How does delivery work?

After you purchase, we'll coordinate a delivery time that works for your schedule. Our own team delivers — not a third-party service. We bring your mattress in, set it up in the room, and make sure everything is right before we leave.

Before delivery day, let us know about any access details that might matter — stairs, tight hallways, elevator buildings, or anything unusual. We'd rather know ahead of time than be surprised on the day.

Do you remove my old mattress?

Yes. Old mattress disposal is available when we deliver your new one. Just let us know at checkout so we can plan the truck space and bring the right team. We handle the heavy lifting — you don't have to figure out what to do with it.

Where do you deliver?

We serve Boone, Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Linville, West Jefferson, Newland, Zionville, and the surrounding High Country communities. If you're not sure whether we deliver to your area, give us a call and we'll confirm.

How long does delivery take after I buy?

For most in-stock mattresses, delivery is typically within a few days. We'll work with your schedule to find a time that's convenient. If a specific mattress needs to be ordered, we'll give you an accurate timeline before you commit.

Trials & Warranties

What you're protected by
What does the 120-night trial mean?

Most of our mattresses come with a 120-night sleep trial — typically with a mattress protector purchase. That means you have 120 nights to decide whether the mattress is truly working for you.

A mattress needs time to break in, and your body needs time to adjust. We generally ask that you give it at least 30 nights before deciding. If it's genuinely not right after that, we'll work with you on a comfort exchange. Ask our team about the specific policy for the mattress you're considering, as details vary by brand.

What if I don't like my mattress after I bring it home?

Call us. That's the most important thing. Don't suffer through it and don't assume you're stuck — talk to us first. We've been doing this long enough to know that sometimes there's a simple fix (the wrong pillow, a base that needs adjusting), and sometimes a comfort exchange is the right answer.

Either way, we want you sleeping well. That's not a slogan — it's why repeat customers and referrals make up the majority of our business.

How long is the warranty and what does it cover?

Most mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty. Some models carry 12 or 15 years, and certain Tempur-Pedic mattresses have a limited lifetime warranty. Warranties cover manufacturer defects — things like abnormal sagging or structural issues that aren't caused by normal wear.

A mattress protector is important here. Most warranties are voided by staining. A $50 protector protects a $1,500 investment. We'll remind you of this at the time of purchase.

Foundations & Accessories

Everything that goes with the mattress
Do I need a box spring?

Usually no. Most modern mattresses work best on a platform base, slatted frame, or adjustable base. Traditional box springs are increasingly unnecessary and can actually cause problems with certain mattress types.

If you're using an older bed frame designed for a box spring, you may need a low-profile foundation or a bunkie board. Tell us what frame you have and we'll tell you exactly what setup works best with the mattress you're considering.

Will my mattress work with an adjustable base?

Most modern mattresses — memory foam, latex, and most hybrids — are adjustable base compatible. Traditional innerspring mattresses may work if they're specifically labeled as compatible. If you're not sure, ask us before you buy and we'll confirm.

Adjustable bases can make a real difference for people who snore, deal with acid reflux, have back pain, or just like reading and watching TV in bed. We carry adjustable bases at both locations — come try one.

Do I really need a mattress protector?

Yes — for two reasons. First, most mattress warranties are voided by staining. One spill without a protector can void a 10-year warranty on a $1,500 mattress. Second, a good protector keeps allergens, dust mites, and moisture out of the mattress itself, which extends its life significantly.

It also unlocks the 120-night sleep trial on most of our mattresses. A protector is a $50 to $100 investment that protects everything else. We don't recommend it to add to your bill — we recommend it because not having one is a real risk.

Does the pillow really matter if I have a good mattress?

More than most people expect. The pillow determines whether your neck and spine stay aligned with the rest of your body. A mattress that fits you perfectly can be partially undermined by a pillow that's the wrong height or firmness for your sleep position.

Side sleepers usually need a higher-loft, firmer pillow to fill the gap between the shoulder and the head. Back sleepers need less loft. Stomach sleepers should ideally use very little or no pillow at all. Our Pillow Guide goes deeper on this.

Financing

Paying over time without the stress
Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer financing through Synchrony HOME with terms of 6, 12, 24, 36, and 60 months, including 0% interest options on qualifying purchases. You can apply in-store at either location or online.

See our Financing page for full details and to apply.

Will applying for financing hurt my credit score?

No. Checking your rate uses a soft credit inquiry only, which does not affect your credit score. A hard inquiry only occurs if you choose to open a Synchrony account and complete your purchase.

What does 0% interest actually mean?

It means you pay exactly what the mattress costs — nothing extra added on top. A $1,200 mattress financed over 12 months at 0% is 12 payments of $100. No interest, no hidden fees on the balance. Subject to credit approval and qualifying purchase amount.

Can I pay it off early?

Yes. You can pay off your Synchrony HOME account at any time with no early payoff penalty. You pay the remaining balance and you're done.
