Who Needs a Firm Mattress

Firmness isn’t a preference — for some sleepers it’s a requirement.

Back sleepers with lower back pain

Back sleeping puts your full weight on your hips and lumbar region. A mattress that isn’t firm enough lets your hips sink, collapsing the lumbar curve and putting your spine under stress all night. What “firm” actually means on our scale

We rate mattresses on a 1–10 scale where 1 is extremely soft and 10 is like sleeping on the floor. Most brands use inconsistent terminology — one brand’s “firm” is another brand’s “medium.” At BCM, Firm typically means 7–8 out of 10. Extra Firm or Ultra Firm means 8–9 out of 10.
