The right firmness is the feel you can relax on comfortably. Start by comparing a few options rather than choosing from a firmness label alone. A “medium” from one brand can feel different from a “medium” in another collection.
Separate firmness from support
Firmness describes how soft or firm the surface feels. Support comes from the mattress construction underneath. A softer surface can still feel supportive, and a harder surface is not automatically the right fit. Compare how comfortably you settle in and how easily you can change position.
Use your sleep position as a starting point
- Side sleepers: Compare cushioning around your shoulders and hips. Try a medium feel, then compare a softer or firmer option.
- Back sleepers: Look for a comfortable balance between cushioning and support. Notice whether your hips feel held comfortably.
- Stomach sleepers: Compare firmer options if your midsection sinks farther than you like.
- Combination sleepers: Test every position you commonly use and check how easily you can roll over.
These are starting points, not rules. Body size, personal preference, the pillow you use, and the type of mattress all influence how a bed feels.
Make your showroom comparison useful
- Begin with two or three different feels: firm, medium, and plush.
- Lie down in your usual sleep position. Take enough time to relax rather than judging the bed by sitting on its edge.
- Use a pillow similar to the one you plan to sleep on, and bring your sleeping partner when possible.
- Compare pressure, ease of movement, and how much motion you notice when your partner moves.
