A guide to choosing comfortably

Adjustable Beds for Seniors: What to Compare Before You Buy

Start with what feels right to you.

The best adjustable bed base fits your mattress, your room, your favorite positions, and the way you like to use the controls. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or helping a family member, a few hands-on comparisons can make the choice clearer.

Know the difference

Adjust your position.
Check your bed’s height separately.

Head and foot adjustment changes the angle of the mattress. It does not mean the entire bed moves up and down.

The bases compared below use configurable legs to set the installation height. Your mattress thickness also affects how high the finished bed feels. Try sitting at the edge and getting in and out with the bed flat.

These are household adjustable bases, not hospital beds or lift-assist equipment. If you need powered whole-bed height adjustment or transfer assistance, discuss those requirements before choosing a base.

Features worth testing

Choose the features you’ll actually use.

A remote that makes sense

Read the labels in ordinary room light. Check button size, spacing, and how the remote feels in your hand. Try the head and foot buttons without relying on a phone app.

Comfortable positions

Adjust the head and feet separately. Try your usual reading or relaxing position, then return to flat. Where offered, test saved positions and ask how to change them.

The finished bed height

Consider the base, leg setting, mattress thickness, and any surrounding frame together. Compare that total with a bed you already find comfortable.

Useful conveniences

Where available, try under-bed lighting, charging ports, and massage. Check whether the controls are easy to reach and whether you like the light and vibration settings.

A compatible mattress and frame

Bring the mattress brand and exact model, plus frame photos and inside measurements. “Platform friendly” does not guarantee a fit with every platform, storage bed, or headboard.

Shared or separate movement

If two people want different positions, ask about a split king with two compatible Twin XL mattresses and independently controlled bases. A one-piece king mattress moves together.

A complete setup for two people

Choosing a split king mattress with adjustable base

A standard split king uses two Twin XL mattresses, each on a compatible adjustable bed base with independent controls. That lets each person choose a position without moving the other side. A one-piece king mattress moves as one surface.

Compare each person’s mattress feel and preferred positions. Confirm that both mattresses are approved for the selected bases and that the complete arrangement fits your frame.

Check the whole package

  • Two Twin XL mattresses and two compatible, independently controlled bases.
  • Remote controls and any synchronization options you want to use.
  • Frame dimensions, clearance, finished bed height, and delivery access.
  • Two Twin XL fitted sheets, suitable protectors, and your preferred top bedding.

Ask for a quote that identifies both mattresses and both bases. A “King” product option does not necessarily describe a complete split king package.

Your showroom checklist

  • Mattress: size, brand, exact model, age, and a photo of the label if available.
  • Bed frame: photos of the rails, slats, center supports, drawers, and headboard.
  • Measurements: inside frame length and width, current floor-to-mattress-top height, and bedroom access.
  • At the showroom: try the remote, preferred positions, return-to-flat, and the finished bed height.
  • Before choosing: confirm compatibility, split configuration if needed, delivery access, total cost, and written terms.

Before you buy

Understand setup and the terms for your base.

Delivery and setup

BCM’s current local delivery and setup charge for an order with adjustable bases is $119 total, charged once per order. Orders including a Tempur-Pedic mattress qualify for free initial local delivery and setup for the whole order.

Local delivery is within 25 miles of the Foscoe warehouse at 8859 NC 105 S, including neighboring-state addresses within that radius. Confirm your address, access, and schedule.

Returns and trials

Adjustable-base sales are final and bases cannot be exchanged. BCM’s 120-night mattress comfort trial does not cover adjustable bases. A mattress brand’s separate trial also should not be assumed to cover a base.

Try the features and confirm the fit before you buy.

Warranty and service

Review the written adjustable-base warranty for your exact model before purchase. Ask what is covered, for how long, and whether labor, service visits, parts, or transportation carry charges.

Base warranties differ from mattress warranties. Our team can help you obtain the applicable terms and discuss the claim process.

Helpful answers

A few questions before you choose.

Searching for “lift beds for elderly”—is an adjustable base what you need?

It depends on the movement you mean. The bases compared here change the angle of the head and foot sections for resting positions. They do not provide powered whole-bed height adjustment or lift-assist transfers, and they are not hospital beds. Tell us which function you’re looking for before choosing a base.

Can I use my existing mattress?

Possibly. Compatibility depends on the exact mattress and the base, not just the mattress size or whether it is called a hybrid or foam mattress. Share the model and manufacturer guidance with us so we can help check before you purchase.

Will an adjustable base fit my bed frame?

It depends on the frame’s inside dimensions, supports, clearance, and the base’s installation requirements. The BT2000 and BT3000 are listed as platform friendly; BedTech lists the BT6500 as not zero-clearance compatible. Bring photos and measurements so we can review the specific combination.

Do I need a split king for separate adjustment?

For fully independent movement on each side of a standard king-size sleeping area, the usual arrangement is two Twin XL mattresses on two independently controlled, compatible bases. A one-piece king mattress is not two independently moving surfaces. Ask us to confirm the complete configuration and controls.

Which controls should I try before choosing?

Try head up and down, foot up and down, and return-to-flat first. Then test any memory buttons or presets you expect to use. Ask to see how to save a position and what happens if power is interrupted, using the instructions for that exact model.

Can BCM help me confirm compatibility and setup?

Yes. Bring your mattress information, frame photos, and measurements. We’ll help review the combination and discuss delivery access and setup. Call ahead to confirm where a particular base can be tried.
