Est. 2001 High Country, North Carolina

Twenty-five years of helping the
High Country sleep better.

The families who bought their first mattress from us are now sending their kids in to buy their own. That's not a marketing line. That's just how long we've been here — and how much this community means to us.

Why Blackberry Creek?

The name comes from a real place.
And a real feeling.

"When I was a little girl, Blackberry Creek was my favorite place in the world. It was peaceful there. I wanted every customer who walked through our doors to feel that same thing."

— Joanne, Founder of Blackberry Creek Mattress

When Joanne was a little girl, there was a place near her house called Blackberry Creek. She loved going there. It was quiet, tucked away from everything, and it brought her a kind of peace that stayed with her long after she left.

Years later, when she was deciding what to name a mattress store, she thought about that creek. She thought about how it felt to be there — still, calm, unbothered. And she thought: that's exactly what I want people to feel when they walk through the door. That's what a good night's sleep should feel like.

So she called it Blackberry Creek. Not because it was clever. Because it was true.

The People Who Built This

Two owners. One purpose.

Blackberry Creek has had two owners in 25 years. That kind of continuity doesn't happen by accident.

Peace, rest, the quiet that comes when you stop carrying the weight of the day — that's what I wanted people to feel. That's still what this store is about.

— Joanne · Founder · 2001
The Founder

Joanne built something that mattered.

Joanne opened Blackberry Creek Mattress in 2001 with a simple belief: that buying a mattress should feel calm, not combative. No scripts, no pressure, no games. Just honest people helping you sleep better.

She named it after a creek she loved as a little girl — a place that always brought her peace — because she wanted her customers to carry that same feeling home with them. The name wasn't marketing. It was a promise.

Over the years, she built a reputation in the High Country that no advertising budget could buy. People came back. They sent their families. They trusted her team the way you trust a neighbor.

Then & Now

We aren't like other mattress stores. That's the whole point. Why would I want to change the name?

— Dick James · Owner
The Current Owner

Dick James retired from Boeing — and chose this.

Dick spent his career as an executive at Boeing. When he retired, most people in that position take it easy. Dick had a different plan. He wanted to give back to the community he called home.

When he learned that Joanne was ready to sell, he saw exactly what he'd been looking for — a business that was already built on the right values, already trusted by its neighbors, already doing something that genuinely improved people's lives.

He thought briefly about changing the name to something that sounded more like a typical mattress store. He quickly let the idea go. "We aren't like other mattress stores," he said. "That's the whole point."

Under Dick's ownership, the store has grown to two locations and continued earning the trust of the High Country — one honest conversation at a time.

Our Story

We started with one idea.
It still drives everything we do.

Buying a mattress shouldn't feel like a battle. But walk into most mattress stores and that's exactly what it feels like — pressure, confusion, prices that change every time you ask, and a salesperson working toward a commission rather than your sleep.

We set out to build a place where you could slow down, ask questions, and get honest guidance. No scripts. No manufactured urgency. Just real people who know this product well enough to tell you what they wouldn't buy.

Twenty-five years later, we have two showrooms, a team with a combined 50+ years at Blackberry Creek, and a floor full of the best mattress brands in the country — hand-selected, every one of them. If we wouldn't put it in our own home, it doesn't make the floor.

We've helped people with back pain, shoulder problems, couples who sleep completely differently, and first-time buyers who had no idea where to start. We've seen what bad sleep does to a person — and what the right mattress can undo. That's why we're still here. And why we're not going anywhere.

What We Stand For

The short version of who we are.

We don't claim to be the biggest. We're not trying to be. We're trying to be the store you trust — and come back to.

Listen first, recommend second

We ask about how you sleep, what's not working, and what you've tried before — before we ever point you toward a mattress.

No pressure. Ever.

Nobody here is pushing you toward something you don't need. We want you to leave confident — not just gone.

Locally owned. Locally accountable.

We're not a chain. Decisions are made right here. If something goes wrong, you call us — not a 1-800 number.

Hand-picked products

Every brand on our floor earned its place. We've slept on them. If we wouldn't put it in our own home, we don't sell it.

Delivery done right

Our own team delivers, sets up, and hauls your old mattress away. We treat your home the way we'd want ours treated.

12-time Best of the Best

Voted best mattress store in the High Country more than a dozen times — because people came back and told their neighbors.

The People Behind It

When you walk in, you meet real people.

No scripts. No uniforms. Just neighbors who know their product and will tell you the honest truth.
